It is difficult to make an absolute assessment of the Oswego River. If the water gauge is high, what a ride! On the other hand this river can be affected by drain and drought to the extreme. The Oswego River is not suggested for beginners with its unknowns and uncertainties. Don’t let me forget to mention the portage over the dam. The Oswego River can be a set of challenges.

The Oswego River is a prime contender for the prettiest in the Pinelands, remarkably striking from one end to the other. The beginning passes through cedar bog that is larger than bogs on other rivers. That being said the Oswego River is very tranquil. The middle is graced by the open panorama of Martha Pond and toward the end there is a short stretch of mixed woods. Overall the Oswego River is mystical and enchanting. It will take you through Atlantic White Cedar swamps, lowland forests and freshwater marshes. Interspersed are numerous bushes including cranberries. The darker water indicates a regular band of ripples. If it’s your lucky day, you may spot a red fox, wild turkey, white tailed deer or a wood duck!
